Capítulo 10: Financial Proof Silences the Salon

The scent of white lilies fought Chanel No. 5 in Madame Montague's salon, and neither won. Isolde LeMaire crossed the silk carpet with the same unhurried step she used on factory floors, her midnight-blue suit tailored to her own design, a folio of audited financials tucked under one arm. The room was thick with inherited titles and borrowed opinions, but she didn't scan for allies. She didn't need one.

Madame Montague, a widow whose chin spoke of three centuries of good breeding, intercepted her with two air kisses and a razor smile. 'Isolde, darling. I heard you have something to share. Or are you here to correct the record?'

'Both.' Isolde handed a slim sheaf of documents to the nearest footman. 'Pass these around. I'll wait.'

She positioned herself near the marble fireplace, the only light strong enough to read by, and let the murmur build. When the last guest had turned a page, she spoke.

'I won't bore you with denials. In this room, rumors are currency, and I understand the exchange rate.' A few nervous laughs. 'But I deal in something more durable: contracts. What you're holding are Lumière's audited statements for the past three years, certified by Delacroix & Fils, the same firm that audits half the houses in this salon. Every euro accounted for. Every supplier relationship documented. Every tax receipt filed. If anyone here still believes my funds are dirty, I invite you to find the discrepancy. Take your time.'

Silence, thick as velvet. A countess by the window turned a page twice without reading it. A baron cleared his throat. No one spoke.

Isolde let the silence do its work. Then she lifted her chin a fraction. 'As for the affair rumor, I will not dignify it with a timeline of my whereabouts. That is what innocent women do, and I am not a defendant yet. But since you all seem so interested in my private life, let me make this simple. If you have proof—photographs, messages, a single witness with a spine—produce it now. In this room. Before all of us. Because if you don't, I will assume it is slander, and I will treat it as such.'

A log crackled in the grate. Someone dropped a teaspoon. It rang on porcelain like a tiny bell.

Isolde's gaze slid from the fireplace to the doorway, where Lina Sorres stood half-hidden behind the velvet curtain, her face the color of old bone. She had not been announced. She had simply appeared, and now everyone was turning to look at her.

Isolde held the gaze. 'Since no one has proof, I'll make myself clear one last time. The next time someone spreads a rumor about my business or my bed, I will not bring financial statements. I will bring lawyers. And I will name names.' She paused, the space between words tight as a wire. 'All of them.'

The room shifted. Not a rustle of fabric, but a realignment of weight, like a court acknowledging a new queen. Lina's hand rose to her throat, her knuckles white. For one second, Isolde thought she might speak, might defend herself, might cry. But Lina only pressed her lips together and vanished into the hallway, her heels clicking once, then gone.

Madame Montague placed a cool hand on Isolde's arm. 'Well played, my dear. But you've made an enemy.'

'I've had worse.' Isolde smoothed the edge of her folio. 'Thank you for the platform, Madame. I'll see myself out.'

She did not run. She walked through the parted guests, past the footman holding her coat, and out into the cold evening air. Only when the car door closed behind her did she let her shoulders drop a single inch.

Her phone glowed on the seat. One message from an unknown number: 'You should have stayed quiet.'

Isolde stared at it for three seconds, then typed back: 'Try again.'

She deleted the draft, blocked the number, and sat back as the car pulled into traffic. The war wasn't over. But for the first time, it was being fought on her terms.
